Kennedy Reshapes Abortion Conflict as He Refines 'Swing Vote' Role
With last week's controversial Supreme Court decision on "partial birth" abortions, Justice Anthony Kennedy redefined the "swing vote" term to his liking, to mean someone who can lead and persuade the Court in a new direction. In so doing, he has introduced wrenching and controversial new language into the abortion debate, while seeming to telegraph to liberals on and off the Court the message: "Don't think I can easily be swayed, especially when fundamental morality is at stake."
