L. Clifford Davis sits alone in his office every Independence Day to contemplate his legal career that began July 4, 1949. A pioneering civil rights lawyer and former state district judge, Davis has accomplished plenty. When he arrived in Texas in 1954, racial segregation was prevalent, so Davis filed lawsuits that resulted in the desegregation of several school districts. He thought he wouldn't see the day when the Supreme Court reversed its course in desegregating public schools, which it did last month.
