4th Circuit Nominee Named in Defamation Suit
E. Duncan Getchell Jr., President Bush's nominee for the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is being accused of spreading defamatory statements about another Virginia lawyer in order to shore up his foundering nomination and shift blame for an $8 million court error. Getchell has been in the spotlight due to political fallout surrounding his nomination, which has been "troubled since the day it was made," in the words of a law professor who follows the 4th Circuit.
