On June 29, 2006, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This decision comes as a result of more than twenty years of work by the United Nations system on that subject. Indeed, the efforts to draft a specific instrument dealing with the protection of indigenous peoples worldwide date back to the 1980s.
